The Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve

The Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve at 39,650 acres is the largest protected piece of tallgrass prairie left on earth. Urban sprawl and conversion to cropland have left this once expansive landscape, originally spanning across 14 states from Texas to Minnesota, at less than 4% of its original size.

Since 1989, The Nature Conservancy in Oklahoma has worked to restore this fully functioning portion of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem with the use of 2,500 free-ranging bison and a “patch-burn” model approach to prescribed burning.

The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve offers excellent wildlife watching opportunities and exceptional views of a variety of natural habitats. Over 700 plants, 300 birds and 80 mammals make this prairie home. Visitors can experience the wide-open prairie and the patches of crosstimbers forest by circling the 15-mile bison driving loop, hiking along designated trails and stopping to take in the views at various scenic turnouts.

The Cheyene-Arapaho Bison Herd

There is a 3,400 acre piece of land just north of El Reno, OK where the Cheyenne-Arapaho tribe maintains an amazing herd of bison.

The Cheyenne-Arapaho tribe has a bison herd that numbers around 300 and at one time it was as high as 700. Today the herd of 300 has bison from different parts of the country including five bulls that came from Yellowstone National Park. They are also being gifted another 70 bison from a bison ranch in Colorado which will bring the herd total to just under 400.

The White Buffalo Lodge in Grove, Oklahoma is truly amazing. The lodging is cabins and a conference center all with pine logs giving a cool rustic vibe. In addition they are in the process of erecting hand painted authentic teepees on the property for additional housing options. But what makes this location a destination would be the three amazing white bison they have in their wildlife area. Below you will see images of these amazing creatures.
